Mangrove Detection and Monitoring

Supporting your strategy through comprehensive mangrove monitoring.
Mangroves: Spectacular ecosystems
Mangroves are rare and prolific ecosystems that boast incredible biodiversity. They help protect coastlines from erosion and local populations from extreme oceanic weather phenomena such as tsunamis.
An endangered resource
Despite their many benefits, mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses, with severe ecological and socio-economic repercussions. Current estimates indicate that, over the last 40 years, mangrove coverage has halved. Deforestation for coastal agriculture, pollution and disease are the main reasons for their disappearance. CLS is committed to supporting affected regions through mangrove monitoring.
Vital satellite monitoring
How do we monitor and protect mangroves while at the same time encouraging the sustainable development of aquaculture and the coastline? The solution lies in the hands of CLS experts, who can map mangrove distribution, detect changes and collect strategic social and environmental data for the management of these endemic ecosystems that are
so essential to countless coastlines.
30 years of experience in land mapping.
7 world regions already mapped: Indonesia, Brazil, Guadeloupe, Martinique, New Caledonia, French Guiana, Africa.
50 in-house geographers, urban planners, environmentalists and geomatics engineers working together to help create prosperous and resilient communities.
CLS proposes solutions for mangrove detection, demarcation and monitoring.
CLS offers high-precision mapping of entire mangrove forests and their evolution.

Flagship projects
INDESO
As part of the INDESO programme, CLS has enabled the Indonesian government to study and protect these habitats using satellite observation tools.
This has helped to improve the overall management of Indonesia’s coastal areas and the monitoring of its mangrove forests. The key challenge was to monitor and protect Indonesia’s mangroves while supporting the sustainable development of its aquaculture and coastline.
The research conducted made it possible to provide recommendations to local stakeholders.
COSTA NORTE
Brazil’s coastline is home to the longest continuous mangrove belt in the world. But it is also a new frontier in terms of oil production.
CLS, Enauta and three universities got together to develop a method for determining the vulnerability of these mangroves to oil pollution. The sensitivity, susceptibility and resilience of this ecosystem was defined using methods such as oceanographic data acquisition, satellite observation and numerical modeling.
The information obtained is crucial to the preservation of this coastline.
