Altimétrie
Technique permettant de mesurer des hauteurs. L'altimétrie par satellite utilise le temps mis par un faisceau radar pour faire l'aller-retour satellite-surface, associé à une localisation précise du satellite, pour effectuer ses mesures.
Argos
A satellite-based location and data collection. Argos was implemented in 1978 and is now used by over 300 organizations in 40 countries.

Beacon
Equipement (more properly known as a Platform) including a radio transmitter, antenna, power supply and , possibly, sensors. The Argos system monitors over 7000 beacons, worldwide.
Buoys
Floating object used as a marker or automatic platform in the ocean and lakes. A buoy can drift or be moored, and can be deployed on ice. Sometimes fitted with sensors to make measurements. The Argos system serves over 2000 buoys, for meteorology, oceanography and glaciology.

Doppler shift
Physical phenomenom occuring when an observer and a source of acoustic or electromagnetic vibration are moving relative to each other. It produces a variation in frequency of the wave received by the observer. This frequency increases or decreases according to whether the observer and the source are moving closer together or further apart. In the Argos system, the Doppler shift is used too locate platforms.
