SOAP 2 and 3: Second and third prototypes of the Ocean Operational analysis and prediction system

Duration:

  • SOAP 3 prototype development: January 2006 - January 2008
  • SOAP 3 maintenance in operational conditions: January 2008 - January 2011

CLS has been involved since 1991 in the development of the SOAP program, which initially aims at demonstrating the feasibility of a meso-scale operational ocean forecasting system assimilating altimetry data. The French Navy has acquired its Ocean Forecast Capacity by implementing a suite of prototypes of incremental complexity. The first one named SOPRANE and was implemented in 1998. The two next ones P2 and P3 are scheduled from 2001 to 2008.

CLS tasks:

In September 2001, the second prototype SOAP 2 was released for operational service by SHOM/CMO (Centre Militaire d'Océanographie, Military Center for Oceanography). This prototype was proved to be more efficient than the former and its geographical domain was far much extended. The modelling was enriched by the addition of a mixed layer model covering the first 400 meters of the water column.

The assimilation took advantage of temperature profiles delivered in real time by CORIOLIS system and military naval vessels on a daily basis. This system is used to routinely support naval Forces, providing them with tailored oceanographic information over the North Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and North-West Indian Ocean. This information is a key element for underwater warfare.

CLS developed the oceanographic scientific algorithms of this new prototype, and its implementation. CLS also maintained it in operational conditions. A new release of the SACSO software was edited. At this stage of the program, a value-added production was undertaken to provide decision tools for sonar's uses regarding the environmental conditions. The operational activity of the military oceanography then organised into two dipoles: first, a routine "service" for regular users on the Atlantic ocean, Mediterranean Sea and North-West Indian Ocean areas, under CLS responsibility ; second, a dedicated support for "crisis" exercises over limited areas.

SOAP 3 is the last stage in the development of SOAP program. CLS was in charge of the prototype feasibility study studied 2001. The P3 modelling will integrate various elements: multi-model, multi-scale, multi-disciplinary. This approach is based on primitive equation models (MERCATOR, HYCOM) and back up systems (using simpler systems as SOAP 2, ARMOR-like, altimetry, etc...).

CLS is responsible for the development of :

  • the remote sensing data (SST and water color) module named ACVP (Retrieval, Control, Validation et Pre-processing).
  • the MO2 module (Modeling of Ocean Objects) for the production of a synthetic bulletin of frontal and eddies features under the aegis of DCN company acting as the industrial architect for the owner SHOM.
