SeaDataNet
A Pan-European marine archive and data management infrastructure

Duration: 2006 - 2010                    Contact:

SeaDataNet project aims to develop a Pan-European marine archive and data management infrastructure which will allow and facilitate a long-term integrated access to oceanographic and marine data, through a unique internet web portal. SeaDataNet brings together a unique group of 49 major institutes and marine data centres from 35 countries bordering the North-East Atlantic, and its adjacent seas. Coordinated by Ifremer, 40 National Oceanographic Data Centres and Satellite Data Centres, 4 scientific modelisation centres, 3 international organisations and 2 associated organisms, are involved in this project, supported by the European Commission under the 6th program. With AVISO/SSALTO portal, CLS will participate as an expert in altimeter data collection, processing and diffusion.

CLS tasks:

CLS' expertise in altimeter data collection, processing and exploiting has allowed it to be selected as the Toulouse platform for the diffusion of satellite data on the European level.

The first step of the project will provide controlled access to integrated data, meta-data and products through 11 interconnected & interoperable platforms represented in the figure as stars.

In this context, CLS will:

  • Integrate the altimeter platform in the network.
  • Allow transnational access to altimeter data.
  • Contribute to joint research activities for:
    • Standards development for satellite data communication, respecting ISO 19 115 format and Marine XML .
    • Software development for interfacing the transnational platform to the system (data grid).
    • Contribution to the preparation of regional or targeted users' products.

Users:

  • National and European environmental ministries or administrations
  • Meteorological and climate Research centres
