MERSEA Strand-1: Marine Environment and Security for the European Area

Duration:January 2003 to June 2004 (18 months)     Contact:

MERSEA Strand-1 is a research project supported by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme. It is directly related to the GMES programme (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security). The objective of MERSEA Strand-1 is to integrate remote sensing and in-situ observations through ocean modelling and data assimilation systems to:

  • deliver information products (physical, chemical and biological) needed by users concerned with European marine environment and security policies,
  • report on the problems met and lessons learnt in supplying this information,
  • contribute to an improved monitoring of the marine environment and security. MERSEA Strand 1 will be followed by an Integrated Project (MERSEA IP) that will use MERSEA Strand 1 results to build by 2008 the ocean component of GMES.

CLS tasks:

  • The MERSEA Strand-1 project workplan includes a real time experiment with four basin-scale integrated monitoring systems (MERCATOR, FOAM, TOPAZ and MFS) and an evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses through an intercomparison exercise. A demonstration of different system applications from user perspectives is also planned (e.g. oil drift and harmful algae bloom monitoring).
  • CLS is involved in the real time experiment with the MERCATOR system and is coordinating the intercomparison exercise. CLS is in charge, in particular, of the development of a WWW server (European GODAE server) that will cluster the four data assimilation systems. The server will use Live Access Server technology to facilitate the visualization, intercomparison and exchange of model outputs from the four data assimilation systems.

Users:

Several demonstration cases will be conducted:
  • Oil spill fate prediction ( e.g. Prestige)
  • Monitoring of harmful algae blooms event
  • Monitoring of sea water ecological quality indicators. (eutrophication)
