MARCOAST

Duration: 36 months from October 2005
Contact:

MARCOAST (MARine and COASTal environment) is the continuation of ROSES Project, where CLS was involved in 2003 and 2004, in the frame of the European Programme GSE (GMES Service Element). This programme is part of GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security). MARCOAST aims to pursue the promotion and the set up of services dedicated to Earth observation applications. Ten countries and 32 partners are involved in this project, with the aim of creating a network for oil spill and water quality monitoring.

CLS tasks:

The aim of MARCOAST project is to propose a set of services for:

  • Oil spill surveillance and drift forecast.
  • Water quality monitoring, with a focus on algae bloom monitoring, evolution and forecasting and coastal quality water indicators.
In this project, CLS is involved in two activities:

  • The set up of Met-Ocean services:
These services will deliver oceanographic data. CLS will support Mercator Ocean in this task. Moreover, CLS will propose a water leaving radiance service, based on what was developed in the frame of Roses. Finally, CLS is in charge of the design of the Data Distribution System.

  • The coordination and evolution of oil spill service chain:
This activity aims to assess user standards for implementation by the Marcoast service providers and propose state-of the-art technique to better satisfy user needs. The approach proposed by CLS is in the continuity of ROSES project, where the process has already been successfully implemented in an iterative way. For the MARCOAST project, this activity will be implementing during three years, and will start by a first version of Service Portfolio Specification based on the ROSES proposal.

Users:

  • National and European environnent administrations
  • Climate and meteorological research organisations
