GYROSCOPE

Duration: From January 2001 to January 2004.     Contact:

Since January 2001, CLS has been involved in the European project GyroScope. GyroScope aims to contribute to the development of a European component of the global ocean observing systems (GOOS), and of a new long-term observing capacity of ocean variability. The GyroScope ocean observing system will use Autonomous Profiling Floats to probe the ocean interior (measure temperature and salinity, European contribution to ARGO). GyroScope is a project funded by the European Commission and the participating laboratories under the thematic action "Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development "of the Fifth Framework Programme.

CLS tasks:

Within GyroScope, CLS is responsible for leading studies about the design of a float array and for analysing the information content of the profiling floats.

More precisely, CLS team is involved in:

  • Array and experiment design: The objective is to design an experimental array allowing the retrieval of the large scale and low frequency signal of variability of temperature, salinity and velocity fields. To provide realistic simulations of the contribution of different profiling float arrays, we will use outputs and profiling float simulations from primitive equation models of the North Atlantic (1/3°, 1/6°).
  • Comparison between altimetry and profiling float data: To better understand the respective physical content of altimetry and vertical profile, systematic comparison will be lead in near real time. Thus, the analysis of the differences between dynamic topography given by altimetry and dynamic height deduced from profiling float allow us to quantify the barotropic and the deep baroclinic component of the circulation and also errors measurements.

Users:

Data are collected and validated before distribution to all interested users through the Coriolis Data Service. (oceanographers, modeling...)
