GAMBLE is a Thematic Network programme funded under EC Framework V. The participants are research and operational user communities involved in satellite altimetry. The programme consists of a series of workshops, informed by expert groups, designed to review the technologies and mission opportunities that may be available over the next 10 years and discuss how this technology may be best used to satisfy the requirements of the various user communities. Possible solutions could involve the supplementation of precise long term Jason class missions with a number of relatively inexpensive micro-satellites, together with the development of technological advancements such as swath altimetry.

CLS tasks:

• CLS is providing its expertise in satellite altimetry and is coordinating the GAMBLE Sea Surface Height workpackage. CLS tasks included a synthesis of the different impact studies carried out to quantify the contribution of multiple altimeter missions (see final report for the Sea Surface Height workpackage at http://www.deos.tudelft.nl/gamble/docs/GAMBLE_finalreport_theme1.pdf).
   
  
• A specific work was carried out to quantify the impact of the Topex/Poseidon- Jason-1 tandem mission on ocean circulation mapping. This study has confirmed that a better mapping of mesoscale variability can be obtained with the tandem mission.
