EMOFOR : Envisat MOnitoring and Forecasting Services for OffshoRe industry

Duration: November 2001 to March 2004. (2.5 years)    Contact :

EMOFOR project is a European Space Agency project, whose main objective is to integrate Earth Observation data into numerical model used by the offshore industry. NERSC is responsible for the numerical models implementation, CLS provides satellite data and Fugro Geos is the product provider.
The project is divided into two parts; a study to estimate the project feasability and a demonstration phase.

CLS tasks:

The first phase has shown the project feasability and has helped to identify the offshore industry needs. CLS offers two types of products and services from satellite data

  • Historical products: these altimetric maps are reprocessed and computed for specific areas to help to better know the ocean variability over a long time period. Data are reprocessed from 1992 to nowadays.

  • Near real time products: CLS delivers altimetry, ocean color and sea surface temperature which give global ocean state and evolution information. These products are used in the NERSC models and are combined with Fugro Geos in situ measurements.

Test services will be conducted for offshore companies to validate this service portfolio. Sea level anomaly map

The second phase has an operational 2-year duration, which will start in July 2003 with a six months testing period followed by a commercial investigation. The service tests are conducted in two different areas - Gulf of Mexico and North Sea. Near real time forecast bulletins realised by Fugro Geos will be provided to BP and Shell. These bulletins will show ocean eddies propagation and will be realised with CLS near real time data.
