CASH, Contribution of Satellite Altimetry to Hydrology

Duration: From July 2004 to January 2006 : 18 months
Contact:

CASH is a "Terre et Espace" project, funded by the Ministry of Research to develop and promote new services using remote data, and involving industrial and scientific partners. This project aims at demonstrating how to use satellite altimetry to address the need of a global survey system of water resources. A consortium with all scientific, instrumental, and operational skills has been created, gathering: IRD/HyBAM, IRD/ESPACE, LEGOS/GOHS, CLS and BRLi.

CLS tasks:

There are two main objectives in this project:

  • The production of a database dedicated to large rivers water heights. These water heights will be obtained for the water bodies located at the intersections between the rivers and the ground tracks of the Topex/Poseidon satellite. This database, accessible on the web, will be created from data archives collected by Topex/Poseidon since its launch in 1992. It will contain improved data obtained via the retracking of the altimetric waveforms (raw data) and the implementation of some specific corrections optimised for the continental areas. The data base will be updated with new data acquired by Topex/Poseidon, and possibly extended to all great rivers.
  • A hydrologic data set will be defined and derived from the altimetric data base described above. The relevance of these data will be evaluated through some dedicated applications, according to the needs expressed by different types of users: scientific, institutional and operational. Finally a prototype of the service will be available on web.

CLS is responsible for:
  • Improvement of altimetry measurement over continental surfaces
    • Optimisation of retracking algorithms and propagation corrections.
    • Operational applications of these algorithms for the production of an improved altimetry data. base, only on pilot sites.
    • Interface between the definition and the generation of hydrologic products.
  • Set up of a web distribution platform dedicated to altimetry products designed for hydrology.
    • Web site definition and specification.
    • Development of the graphic interface, visualisation and data downloading.
    • Design and web site publication.
    • Web site maintenance.

Users:

The CASH project is dedicated to hydrologists (scientific users), who want to evaluate and integrate remote sensing observations, and to people involved in the management of water resources (mainly institutional organisms).
