AVISO user services was created in 1992, in the frame of TOPEX/POSEIDON launch, and is fully funded by CNES. Since 1992, one of the AVISO user service activities is to contribute to altimetric and DORIS data promotion. It aims to inform about latest improvements in oceanography since new space observing technologies appeared. Expected benefits are various and all communication tools are used.

CLS tasks:

Outreach objectives. Promote technology and its applications is one of the best way to demonstrate the space missions importance, to favor practical use of missions data, and to ensure their durability. Thus, more and more people are aware of what can be done with these data for scientific as well as for operational purposes.

Realisations. To reach as many people as possible, all communication tools are used.

  • AVISO website.

  • AVISO manages its web site, created in 1995. This includes the web site conception, editorial animation in French and in English, with news on a regular basis. Its updating makes it a reactive and interactive tool. Updated information about the products, explanation about technical points and applications, latest development, and data users studies can be found on the web site. The web site administration also encompasses feedback analysis and search engine submission and survey in order to always improve information. The follow up of technical aspect is part of activities, and new web technologies features are set up when required, such as dynamic pages, Live Access Server, mailing lists.

  • Brochures, leaflets, posters, videos.

  • AVISO is responsible for conception, writing and realisation of several communication tools: brochures, leaflets, posters, videos… Series of leaflets and posters have been published at every major step in the satellites' life.

  • Outreach committee.

  • AVISO contributes to the definition of strategies to highlight altimetry and DORIS in the frame of the "Outreach committee". This international structure is composed of NASA/JPL, CNES, CLS and the Science Working Team (SWT), where associated scientists to Topex/Poseidon and Jason missions are represented.

  • AVISO newsletter

  • First published in 1992, the AVISO newsletter contains information about AVISO, TOPEX/POSEIDON and Jason-1 missions, data validation, scientific results etc. The newsletter is available in French and in English once a year, on subscription. The editorial secretary is done by CLS.

Public:

The target audience is very large, with users, SWT members, scientists from more or less relevant subject, industrials, citizens and their elected representatives, child of school age, students, and everyone who may be concerned.
